Instructions on how to wash and care your sarees

  • Designer, festive, traditional and party wear sarees should never be machine washed.
  • Ideally dry clean sarees for maintaining the saree fabric.
  • Store sarees in cool place, do not wrap them or keep them in plastic bags, plastics have the tendency to react with Zari and turn it black. Zari when exposed to humid and moist air gets oxidised and turns black. It is best to store the saree in light cotton linen cloth.
  • If you choose to hand wash saree instead of dry clean, do not use harsh detergents. Firstly, wash the saree gently in plain water couple of times and soak in mild detergent, quickly clean it without keeping the saree exposed to detergent for too long. Also do not brush or lash the saree. The best thing to do would be to test a small portion of saree before proceeding with the complete hand wash process.
  • Do not wring the saree or keep it wet for too long.
  • Air dry the sarees, avoid direct sunlight.
  • To press the saree, the hot iron setting depends on the type of saree fabric. Cotton sarees can be pressed with hot iron while silk, rayon, nylon, georgette and other fabrics need medium or low iron setting. For most fabrics, it is generally preferable to press the fabric on the wrong side to avoid the risk of damage, textured saree fabrics like velvet could be crushed and the sheen of linen and silk fabrics could be altered if you press on the finished side of the fabric. For Silk fabric, use a medium heat seating and dry iron silk on wrong side of the fabric. For polyester fabric, iron while still damp, pre-moisten it with a spray bottle or use the spray button on iron to dampen the fabric. Use low or medium heat. For Nylon saree fabric, use low heat and dry iron without steam. Use spray only if necessary.
