Right from prehistoric times, until the present day, Indians have embraced traditional ethnic garments from generations to generations. Globalization and economic development have upsurge popularity of Western outfits in India, but the proclivity and passion for Indian traditional outfits have always ruled the hearts of modern Indians. Today, I would like to showcase one such most popular ethnic attire – The Lehenga . Lehenga Choli is a quintessential traditional outfit which reflects Indian culture and values. This stunning attire perfectly accentuates the beauty and grace of Indian women. It is the most desired and preferred choice for Wedding celebrations and festivities such as Karwa Chauth, Diwali, Navratri and all social traditional functions. Bridal Lehengas are one of the most searched for and popularly in demand attires for Indian brides.
Despite of the sharp contrasts between age old traditions and urban modernity, the love for Lehengas among women would never cease. For our non-Indian cultural enthusiasts, let me explain what is a Lehenga? Lehenga is a long ankle length skirt worn by Indian women often adorned with embellishments such as stone work, sequins, embroidered patterns, mirror work, pleated, plain, or crafted with zari and brocade designs. Lehenga is usually paired with a blouse also known as choli and a drape colloquially called as dupatta or odhni in India.
As we traverse through the Indian sub-continent, the diversity in regional cultural differences can be best observed from differences in lifestyle and language dialect. Lehenga with blouse is known as Ghagra Choli or Chaniya Choli in western Indian states such as Gujarat, Rajasthan; Lehenga choli in north and central parts of India such as Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh. Pattu Pavdai or Langa Voni in South India. Lehengas are almost widely known attire in whole of India. The traditional ethnic outfits of the north eastern Indian states represent the true spirit of India. I shall cover the dresses of seven north eastern states in my future blogs. After having a brief understanding on the demographic ethnicity of traditional Lehengas, let us now dwell into seven most popular Lehenga designs and fashion trends of 2020.
